 Lighting a Weber Charcoal BBQ

Date Created: 12/2/13
Lighting a Weber Charcoal BBQ Its often a tricky and very messy job to get a charcoal bbq started. When the good weather arrives its best to have the bbq know how and skills to get your charcoal barbecue started quickly and easily. Fortunately Weber have created some accessories to ensure that you'll have no problems getting your bbq lit, once you've mastered the skills you will never look back. Below are some tips to ensure you get the best out of your charcoal bbq.

First up is the charcoal - Australian Heat Beads are often the preferred choice for many charcoal bbq enthusiasts. Weber have a range of briquettes which are similar to heat beads. Both are compacted and formed charcoal which has been designed to burn hot and at a consistent temperature for a long period of time. This helps you when barbecuing as some traditional charcoal and lumpwood burns at a very high temperature for a short period of time, which can cause flare ups and burns the food on the outside and leaves it raw in the middle. The consistent temperature of heat beads or Weber briquettes allows you to cook the food with confidence.

Using a chimney starter and firelighters to get the charcoal lit makes the process very simple. Fill the chimney starter with charcoal - remove the cooking grate from the Weber BBQ - place some firelighters on the cooking grate and light and then place the chimney starter over the firelighters. Within approximately twenty minutes the charcoal will be lit and ready to use. Using a bbq glove or mitt lift out the chimney starter and pour into the bbq.

Depending on the cooking method, (indirect or direct), will depend upon the placement of the charcoal. Weber charcoal barbecues come with charcoal dividers or charcoal baskets these can be used to separate the charcoal into hot and cool areas. If the food is getting too hot and out of control, it can be placed in a cool area so that it doesn't get burnt. Keeping the lid on the bbq also helps to control the temperature. Charcoal needs oxygen to burn, reducing the amount of oxygen by putting the lid on controls the flames and the temperature. Weber barbecues don't come with a height adjustable cooking grates, which are unlikely to have little difference therefore using the technique above allows you to control the temperature. weber performer charcoal bbq If you want to buy a Weber Charcoal bbq and you're not sure its worth the hassle then using the above method can make the process easier. Alternatively Weber have the Performer bbq which uses a gas ignition system to get the charcoal light. Simply put the charcoal in the Performer bbq and use the gas ignition to lit the charcoal. Approximately after ten minutes turn the gas off and continue to cook on charcoal. You'll get all the taste from a Weber charcoal bbq without the hassle of lighting the charcoal.
